SONGDA is now approaching the Ryukyu Islands and has accelerated in the past 24 hours. At 20 HKT, SONGDA was centred about 120 km (65 NM) WNW of Okinawa.

Although SONGDA's eye is still intact and can be seen in satellite imagery, the cloud top temperature of its eyewall has risen. Sea temperatures are expected to drop as SONGDA moves northward, and a weakening trend is expected. Extratropical transition is expected about 3 days later.

The subtropical ridge has strengthened slightly after the passage of a westerly ridge following the first series of troughs, leading to an increased westward component of SONGDA's track. However, another series of mid-latitude troughs currently near the East China Sea will weaken the ridge again to allow a recurvature just east of Taiwan.
Current T-number: T7.0/7.0/D1.5/24 HRS
SONGDA's central dense overcast becomes more symmetrical and it has developed a well-defined eye with warm core temperature. SONGDA should have reached its peak intensity given ambient conditions, and will start to weaken once it reaches higher latitudes with cooler seas. Extratropical transition is expected to start in 3 to 4 days' time.

SONGDA has intensified rapidly over the past 24 hours and has turned to the northwest. At 20 HKT, SONGDA was centred about 710 km (380 NM) ESE of Manila.
SONGDA is the 112th name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Vietnam, which is the name of a river in the northern part of the country. This name was last used in 2004.
The western edge of the Pacific subtropical ridge has retreated. SONGDA is now situated in the southwestern periphery of the ridge and will move NW in the next 48 hours. It will then cross the ridge axis and start to recurve.

A central dense overcast has developed around SONGDA's eye. It is expected to strengthen into a category 4 typhoon under good conditions in the Philippine Sea. As it travels northwards, sea temperatures start to decrease and SONGDA will gradually weaken.

The subtropical ridge remains firmly in place north of SONGDA, providing a consistent WNW movement. However, another series of troughs propagating eastward in central China will later weaken the ridge enough to induce a recurvature.

An eye has developed and was apparent in visible satellite imagery earlier. Outflow has improved over the last 24 hours, and it is expected SONGDA will intensify in the next 72 hours. Lower sea temperatures will cause the storm to weaken afterwards.

The subtropical ridge north of 04W is expected to drive the storm in a WNW direction in the next 72 hours. 04W will be at the southwestern periphery of the ridge by t+72, after which its track will turn increasingly poleward.

04W's convections are concentrated in its southern periphery. Its low-level circulation centre was exposed this morning but has since then been surrounded by cloud bands again. Under improving conditions 04W should pick up an intensifying trend soon.

Tropical disturbance 98W strengthened considerably today, first into tropical depression (04W) this morning and is now a tropical storm. At 20 HKT, 04W was centred about 340 km (180 NM) ESE of Yap.

04W is located in a region of warm waters favourable for tropical cyclone development (about 28 degrees). Coupled with low vertical wind shear and generally good outflow channels, 04W is expected to intensify at about climatological rate.
