NANMADOL made landfall at southern Taiwan this morning and entered Taiwan Strait later this afternoon. At 20 HKT, NANMADOL was centred about 580 km (320 NM) ENE of Hong Kong.

NANMADOL is expected to move N or NNW into Taiwan due to the combined steering force from the subtropical ridge NE of the storm and the high pressure SE of it. As the trough currently in China is showing signs of weakening, latest forecast calls for an intensification of the subtropical ridge that will force NANMADOL to move west towards Fujian.

NANMADOL made landfall at northeastern tip of Luzon this morning, but re-entered sea soon afterwards. At 20 HKT, NANMADOL was centred about 400 km (220 NM) SSE of Kaohsiung.

NANMADOL is expected to track NNW towards Taiwan under the combined steering force, and will later move N. Track forecast for the extended taus remains uncertain as models diverge greatly on this.

NANMADOL is now situated in the southwestern periphery of the subtropical ridge, and is expected to move NNW across Luzon Strait. The ridge is expected to retreat and allow a poleward turn, and will later re-extend at lower latitudes to inflict eastward track component. As NANMADOL is expected to be far away from TALAS, the chance of interaction becomes very small.

Affected by a weak ridge north of the storm, NANMADOL has been moving westward in the past 24 hours. The ridge is expected to be weakened by a passing trough, after which NANMADOL should turn poleward. At later taus NANMADOL may interact with TALAS to produce a northeastern turn.

Tropical disturbance 96W in the Philippine Sea intensified into tropical depression 14W early today, and continued to intensify into a tropical storm, which was named NANMADOL. At 20 HKT, NANMADOL was centred about 710 km (380 NM) ENE of Manila.
NANMADOL is the 121st name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Micronesia, which is the name of a famous ruin at Pohnpei. This name was last used in 2004.
NANMADOL is now slow moving as no prominent steering force exists after the collapse of the subtropical ridge north of the storm earlier. The storm is expected to drift north slowly under the influence of the weak equatorial anticyclone to its southeast as well as the cyclone's internal force. NANMADOL is part of a monsoon gyre in which a disturbance east of it is expected to develop. Once developed, the two will undergo cyclonic movement about the common centre, meaning that NANMADOL will move NE or even E. The complex mechanism involved implies that this forecast is subject to large uncertainty.

NANMADOL has tight circulation, although convections are displaced to the west. Under favourable sea temperatures and divergence environment, NANMADOL is expected to strengthen into a typhoon gradually.
