| Information about the eclipse 是次日食資料 |
A total solar eclipse will occur on August 21 (early August 22 Hong Kong Time) in the United States; this marks the first such occurrence within the contiguous US since 1979. The path of totality strikes Earth near 16:50 UTC (00:50 HKT) in the northern Pacific Ocean, moving east-northeast and entering the US in the state of Oregon at around 17:15 UTC (01:15 HKT). From there, the lunar shadow turns east and then east-southeast, sweeping across central US in the next 90 minutes and crossing the following states: Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina. The umbra moves into the Atlantic Ocean near Charleston at 18:50 UTC (02:50 HKT), and never crosses significant landmass again before it lifts off the Earth's surface south of Cape Verde just after 20:00 UTC (04:00 HKT).
Outside the path of totality, a partial eclipse can be observed in the rest of North and Central Americas, northern South America, extreme eastern Russia, western Europe and western Africa. Most Islands in the northern Atlantic Ocean are also included in this list.
