A disturbance SE of Japan successively intensified into a tropical depression and a tropical storm today, which was given a temporary number of 16W by the JTWC. At 20 HKT, 16W was centred about 680 km (370 NM) SE of Tokyo.

16W is currently situated south of a subtropical ridge which is responsible for its WNW movement. It is expected that a passing mid-latitude trough will weaken this ridge to allow a full recurvature in 72 hours' time.
