MUJIGAE is expected to be closest to Hong Kong in the next few hours, passing some 300 km (160 NM) south of the Observatory. Winds will strengthen from the northeast, turning into southeast later tonight.
Tropical disturbance 90W consolidated quickly and intensified into a tropical depression (14W) earlier today. At 20 HKT, 14W was centred about 560 km (300 NM) SSE of Hong Kong.
14W is expected to move W to WNW in the next 3 days under the influence of an anticyclone in central China.

Vertical wind shear is increasing in the South China Sea while both divergence and convergence are still developing near the storm. Sea surface temperatures are favourable. It is therefore expected that 14W should be able to intensify into a tropical storm in the near future before touching Hainan Island.
