The subtropical ridge is still firmly anchored east of Japan. MA-ON is expected to move W or WNW along the southern periphery of the ridge in the next 72 hours. Recent numerical forecasts show that a mid-latitude trough will cause the ridge to retreat after t+72, which will allow a poleward turn in the extended forecast period.

Tropical disturbance 90W in the northwestern Pacific Ocean has intensified into tropical depression 08W. At 20 HKT, 08W was centred about 1420 km (770 NM) ENE of Guam.
A broad subtropical ridge is anchored east of Japan. With the ridge migrating to the north on the next few days, 08W is expected to move W/WNW in the next three days in its southern periphery.

08W's convections start to spiral around its centre. The storm is in an area of warm sea surface temperatures and good divergence. Gradual strengthening is expected in the next three days.
