KULAP has been travelling faster than projected. The storm is now in the southwestern periphery of the subtropical ridge and will move NW steadily. Current forecasts call for a retreat of the ridge by mid-latitude troughs that will see KULAP recurving in the Yellow Sea.

KULAP's low-level circulation centre is now fully exposed with little deep convections in its vicinity. Shear in that region seems to be easing, but divergence is poor and sea temperatures are marginal. KULAP is expected to remain as a weak tropical storm and will weaken once it reaches cooler seas.

Tropical disturbance 90W in northwestern Pacific strengthened into tropical storm KULAP today, which was later given the storm number 17W. At 20 HKT, KULAP was centred about 940 km (510 NM) ESE of Okinawa.

KULAP is now moving N slowly as guided by the subtropical ridge to its east. Various numerical model forecasts suggest that the ridge will extend westward very soon, and that KULAP will gradually turn west as a result.

KULAP is in a region with low shear but marginal sea temperatures after the passage of TALAS. It is forecast to strengthen at less than climatological rate in the next 72 hours.
