93W east of the Philippines has gradually intensified into tropical storm 10W and was named SAOLA. At 20 HKT, SAOLA was centred about 550 km (300 NM) ENE of Manila.

SAOLA is weakly steered by an anticyclone to its east and the subtropical ridge to the north, resulting in an overall NW to NNW movement. Forward speed is expected to be low since neither anticyclone is close to the storm to exert significant influence. The storm is expected move more equatorward as it arrives at a higher latitude as the northern ridge will become closer to SAOLA. The ridge may extend at lower latitudes later that could cause the storm to resume its NW/NNW movement, but the situation is complicated by the development of DAMREY in which some models indicate interactions are possible.
