PRAPIROON reverses its direction and intensifies into a category 2 typhoon again. At 08 HKT, PRAPIROON was centred about 530 km (290 NM) SE of Okinawa.
PRAPIROON is the twelfth name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Thailand, meaning the God of rain. This name was used in 2000 and 2006, with the later occurrence necessitating a controversial #3 Strong Wind Signal.
The development of tropical cyclone MARIA has blocked the subtropical ridge, and now PRAPIROON is again without major steering influence. The storm is expected to move SW and produce a clockwise loop, and will resume its N/NE motion once MARIA moves to higher latitudes and the subtropical ridge extends again.

PRAPIROON has intensified slightly in the past 12 hours. No significant change to its intensity is expected in the next 48 hours, but after that cooler seas and higher shear will cause PRAPIROON to weaken.

PRAPIROON is the twelfth name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Thailand, meaning the God of rain. This name was used in 2000 and 2006, with the later occurrence necessitating a controversial #3 Strong Wind Signal.
PRAPIROON is now expected to turn back to NW or even WNW as the subtropical ridge is forecast to expand westwards. Its forward speed will remain slow until after t+72 when it recurves along the northwestern periphery of the subtropical ridge. The time of recurvature depends on how west PRAPIROON moves in response to the ridge extension.
Current T-number: T4.5/4.5/S0.0/24 HRS
PRAPIROON remains symmetrical with a defined eye. The storm should maintain its intensity with a chance of slight weakening due to upwelling of cooler water as the storm stagnates. Weakening should become more rapid as PRAPIROON recurves due to much cooler sea temperatures and higher shear.

PRAPIROON will move NE along the northwestern periphery of the equatorial ridge, and will turn to N/NNE briefly as it travels along the western edge of the subtropical ridge. A final recurvature is expected as PRAPIROON reaches the northwestern edge of the subtropical ridge.

PRAPIROON's northern eyewall became loose, albeit situating in environment with low shear and good outflow. It is possible that PRAPIROON's slow movement has lowered local sea temperatures. As ocean heat content is not expected to be too favourable on higher latitudes, PRAPIROON should maintain intensity until it reaches much cooler seas, where it will start to lose intensity more rapidly.

Beyond t+96, PRAPIROON is expected to reach the western periphery of the subtropical ridge and the direction is expected to turn to the NNE.

Divergence is expected to improve as the trough draws near, and is favourable to PRAPIROON's development. Ocean heat content may drop as PRAPIROON reaches higher latitudes, but will still be able to sustain an appreciable intensity.

Tropical disturbance 99W intensified into tropical depression 22W yesterday, and developed quickly into a severe tropical storm today. The storm was named PRAPIROON by the JMA. At 08 HKT, PRAPIROON was centred about 1230 km (660 NM) SE of Okinawa.
PRAPIROON is the twelfth name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Thailand, meaning the God of rain. This name was used in 2000 and 2006, with the later occurrence necessitating a controversial #3 Strong Wind Signal.
PRAPIROON is located south of a weakness in the subtropical ridge. However the weakness is not deep enough for the storm to recurve, and PRAPIROON is moving west steadily. Such motion is expected to continue through t+48, when a deeper trough is expected to create an opening. Still steering influence will remain weak and PRAPIROON will continue to move at a slow pace, except that some poleward track component is expected.
Current T-number: T3.5/3.5/INT OBS
PRAPIROON is developing quickly, and its convective bands are wrapping tightly around the centre. The storm is expected to intensify in warm seas with almost no shear, and as divergence improves PRAPIROON should be able to reach category 3 to 4 strength by t+72.
