The steering force from the subtropical ridge is stronger than expected and TORAJI continued to accelerate. It is now expected to move NE along the NW periphery of the subtropical ridge.

TORAJI has intensified into a severe tropical storm. At 2 pm, TORAJI was centred about 340 km (180 NM) SW of Kagoshima.

As the subtropical ridge retreats TORAJI will soon decelerate. The ridge will re-extend later, contributing to a temporary poleward turn followed by a recurvature along the ridge's northwestern periphery.
Current T-number: T3.5/3.5/D0.5/24 HRS
TORAJI's structure becomes symmetric, but as the storm enters high shear region, it will start to weaken soon. This forecast puts TORAJI across Japan landmass for extended period of time, which is also a reason for its weakening. TORAJI will transform into an extratropical cyclone three to four days later.

The disturbance off the coast of Taiwan intensified into tropical depression 15W last night, and into a tropical storm today. The storm is named TORAJI by the JMA. At 2 pm, TORAJI was centred about 200 km (110 NM) WNW of Okinawa.
TORAJI is the 31st name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by North Korea, which is a flower found in the deep mountains of the country. This name was used in 2001 and 2007.
TORAJI is moving NE along the northwestern periphery of a subtropical ridge that digs into South China Sea. The ridge is expected to weaken soon, and in a lack of steering force TORAJI will stagnate in East China Sea. The storm will turn north near t+48 as the ridge reorientates into N-S direction, placing TORAJI at its western periphery. At later taus TORAJI will move to the northwestern periphery of the ridge and will start to move NE again into the westerlies.

TORAJI's cloud signature improved significantly over the past 12 hours. The storm is expected to intensify further in an area of warm sea temperatures and low shear, together with improved divergence ahead of a passing trough. At later taus shear will increase and the storm should start to weaken, and transform into an extratropical cyclone by t+120.
