Naming
KUJIRA is the 75th name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Japan, and is the Japanese name for the constellation Cetus (whale). This name was used in 2003 and 2009.
KUJIRA has been moving NNW in the past 24 hours, and its movement is becoming erratic as land interaction sets in. It is expected to move NW or NNW across Hainan and into the Gulf of Tonkin. Another landfall in western Leizhou or southern Guangxi should take place tomorrow night.
KUJIRA will weaken as it crosses land and experiences increased frictional forces. The Gulf of Tonkin is not big enough for the storm to recover lost intensity. KUJIRA will weaken rapidly as it makes its final landfall.
Effects on
Hong Kong
KUJIRA is further away from Hong Kong than expected, and wind impact should not be significant apart from occasional strong force winds offshore. However, squally showers will persist tomorrow and on Wednesday.
08W has intensified into a tropical storm, and was named KUJIRA. At 8 pm, KUJIRA was centred about 670 km (360 NM) SSW of Hong Kong. The #1 Standby Signal was issued at 9:40 pm.
KUJIRA is the 75th name in the tropical cyclone name list. It was contributed by Japan, and is the Japanese name for the constellation Cetus (whale). This name was used in 2003 and 2009.
The subtropical ridge retreated today, allowing room for KUJIRA to move north. It will continue to move north in the next 24 hours, and is expected to turn NNW following the shape of the ridge.
KUJIRA intensified today, although its upper-level convections still look rather disorganized. It is expected to maintain current intensity or strengthen slightly before landfall, after which rapid weakening should follow.
Effects on
Hong Kong
As KUJIRA edges closer, southeasterly winds are expected to strengthen tomorrow, veering to the south late Tuesday and Wednesday as the storm nears shore. Squally showers are already affecting Hong Kong, and will persist in the next few days.
Tropical disturbance 91W over central South China Sea has intensified into tropical depression 08W. At 8 pm, 08W was centred about 150 km (80 NM) SSW of Xisha.
08W has been moving northwest slowly under the influence of the subtropical ridge to its northeast. The ridge is expected to retreat, allowing 08W to move north along its western periphery towards southern China coastal areas.
08W's convections are concentrated in its western side. It will still need a substantial period of time to consolidate, despite being in warm seas with low to moderate vertical wind shear. It should be able to reach tropical storm strength as it crosses northern South China Sea.
As 08W edges closer, southeasterly winds are expected to strengthen on Monday, veering to the south as the storm nears shore midweek this week. 08W will also bring squally showers to the territory.
