Information about the eclipse 是次日食資料

A total solar eclipse will occur on December 4 in the extreme southern side of the globe. The umbral shadow of the Moon hits Earth near 7:00 UTC (15:00 HKT) in the seas east of the Falkland Islands. It then migrates southwards, entering Antarctica near 7:35 UTC (15:35 HKT) which is also around the time of greatest eclipse. As the umbral shadow hits the backside of the Earth, the path of totality travels westwards (relative to the ground) while on Antarctica, before moving north and entering the Antarctic Ocean again near 8:00 UTC (16:00 HKT). The shadow lifts off the Earth's surface just after 8:05 UTC (16:05 HKT), marking the end of totality on Earth.

A partial eclipse can be observed within a wider area surrounding the path of totality. However, except for Antarctica, the only landmasses covered by this area include the extreme southern part of Argentina, southern Africa, southern Australia and southern New Zealand.

Note that unlike lunar eclipse, not all places experience these times as the moon moves across the sky (and so does its shadow). They serve to show the times at which there exists at least a location on Earth that can experience those events.

  1. A solar eclipse always starts as partial eclipse starts or at sunrise, and always ends as partial eclipse finishes or at sunset. 日食必會於日出或初虧時開始,而於日落或復圓時結束。

The hybrid solar eclipse in 2023 will appear as a very slight partial eclipse in Hong Kong, hardly visible with the naked eye.
