Tropical disturbance 95W in northwest Pacific intensified into tropical depression 27W earlier today. It strengthened further into a tropical storm this afternoon, and was named MA-ON. At 2 pm, MA-ON was centred about 1700 km (920 NM) ESE of Iwo Jima.

A wind field analysis scan this morning suggests gale force winds in its northeastern quadrant, but the circulation centre is not very complete. The storm is in a low vertical wind shear environment, with somewhat weaker upper-level divergence along its projected path. Numerical models are not suggesting sigificant development, and dissipation is likely by t+72.
